２５章

1.　そこで、天の王国は、十人のおとめたちが自分たちのランプを持って花婿に会いに出て行くのと似ている。

2.　彼女たちの五人は思慮深く、五人は愚かな人たちだった。

3.　愚かな人々は、それぞれランプは持っていたが、彼女たちは油を持って来てはいなかった。

4.　しかし、思慮深い人々は、自分のランプと共に、彼女たちの入れ物に油を持っていた。

5.　しかし、花婿がぐずぐずしているので、皆は眠気で重くなり眠ってしまった。

6.　さて、夜中に叫び声が起こった。『見なさい、花婿が来られたよ！彼に会いに行きなさい。』

7.　そこで、これらのおとめたちは皆起き上がり、彼女たちのランプを用意した。

8.　それから、愚かな者たちは思慮深い者たちに言った。『あなたたちの油をいくらか私たちにもらえませんか。私たちのランプは消えかかっているのです。』

9.　しかし、思慮深い者たちは、答えてこう言った。『私たちとあなたたちとに十分なほどはありません。行ってあなたたちのために買った方が良いですよ。』

10.　ところが、彼女たちが買うために出て行くと花婿が来てしまった。そして、用意のできている人々［人々］は彼と共に婚宴に入って行き、戸は閉じられた。

11.　それから、後になって残されたおとめたちも来てこう言った。『主よ、主よ、私たちです。開けてください。』

12.　しかし、彼は答えて言った。『アーメン。私はおまえたちに言う。私はおまえたちを知らない。』

13.　それだからこそ用心していなさい。人の子が来るその日、その時をおまえたちは知らないからだ。

14.　（天の王国[1]は）外国にでかけるある人が、自分の僕たちを呼んで彼らに彼の財産を渡すようなものだ。

15.　そして、ある者には彼は五つのタラントを与え、ある人には二つを、ある人には一つを、それぞれの能力に応じて与えた。そして、すぐに外国に出て行った。

16.　さて、五タラントを受けた人は、行って、それで取り引きし、他に五タラントを得て来た。

17.　同じ様に、二タラントの者も、彼は他に二つを得て来た。

18.　しかし、一タラントを受けた人は、去って地を掘り、彼の主人の銀を隠した。 

19.　さて、多くの時が経った後、これらの僕たちの主が来て彼らと共に勘定書の清算をした。

22.　また、二タラントを受けた者も来て言った。『あなたは私に二タラントをお渡しになりましたが、ご覧ください。それらの他に私はもう二タラントを得ました。』

23.　彼の主は彼に言った。『満足だ、善良で忠実な僕よ。おまえはわずかなものにも忠実だった。私はおまえに多くのものを任せよう。おまえの主である、私の喜びの中に入りなさい。』

24.　さて、一タラントを受けた者も来て言った、『主よ、私は難しい人であることを知っていました。あなたは種を蒔かなかった所から収穫し、散らさなかった所から集めるのです。

25.　それで、私は恐かったのであなたのタラントを地に隠しておきました。ご覧ください。あなたの物をお取り下さい。』

26.　すると、彼の主は彼に向かって答えて言った。『悪い怠け者の僕め。お前は私が種を蒔かなかった場所から収穫し、私が散らさなかった場所で集める事を知っていたのか。

27.　それなら、お前は私の銀をあの銀行家たちの所に置いておくべきだったのに。そうしたら、私は来て利息と一緒に私のものを受けられたのだ。

28.　だから、彼からタラントを取り上げよ。そして、十タラントを持っている人にあげよ。

29.　持っている者には、与えられて彼はさらに富む。しかし、持っていない者は、彼が持っているものも取り上げられるからだ。

30.　そして、この役にたたない僕は、外の暗闇に投げ出せ。そこで泣き叫び、歯ぎしりするのだ。』

31.　また、人の子が彼の栄光のうちに来る時には、聖なる使いたちもすべて彼と一緒なのだ。それから彼は彼の栄光の玉座に着く。

32.　そして、彼の前にすべての国民[2]が集められ、彼は羊飼いが山羊どもから羊たちを分けるように彼らを分ける。

33.　そして、羊たちは彼の右に置き、山羊どもは左に置く。

37.　その時、義人たちは彼に答えてこう言う。『主よ私たちはいつあなたが空腹であったのを見て、食べ物をさし上げましたか？また、渇いているのを見て、飲み物をさし上げましたか？

38.　そして、あなたが寄留の外国人であったのを見て、寛大におもてなし致しましたか？また、裸だったので着せて差し上げましたか？

39.　また、いつあなたが病気であったのを見、牢獄におられるのを見て、あなたの所に行って差し上げたのですか？』、

40.　すると、王は彼らに言う。『アーメン。私はあなたがたに言う。これらの私の兄弟たちだからということで、最も小さな（人）の一人にしてくれたのは、あなたがたが私にした事なのだ。』

41.　そして、それから彼は左にいる人々に言う。『私から離れよ。これらの呪われた者どもよ。そして、ディアボロスとその使いたちのために用意されていた永遠の火の中に行け。

42.　私が空腹であったのに、お前たちは食べ物をくれず、私が渇いていたのに、飲み物をくれなかった。

43.　私が寄留の外国人であった時に、私を受け入れてくれなかったし、裸であったのだがお前たちは私に着せてくれなかった。そして、病気であったし、牢屋にいたのだが、お前たちは尋ねてくれなかったからだ。』

44.　その時、彼らは彼に言う。『主よ、いつ私たちはあなたの空腹だったり、乾いていたのを、また、寄留の外国人であったり、裸であったり、病気であったり、牢屋におられたの見て助けに行きませんでしたか？』

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

 ² Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 

³ Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,

 ⁴ but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

⁵ But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

⁶ “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 
⁷ Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 

⁸ And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’

 ⁹ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 

¹⁰ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

The Parable of the Talents

¹⁴ “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. ¹⁵ And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 

¹⁶ Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 

¹⁷ And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. ¹⁸ But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. ¹⁹ After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

²⁰ “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 

²¹ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

 ²² He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’

²⁴ “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. ²⁵ And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’

²⁶ “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.

 ²⁷ So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.

²⁸ Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

²⁹ ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. ³⁰ And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

The Son of Man Will Judge the Nations

³¹ “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy^[c] angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 

³² All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.

 ³³ And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

 ³⁴ Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

 ³⁵ for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 

³⁶ I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

³⁷ “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? ³⁸ When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clotheYou? ³⁹ Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ ⁴⁰ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

⁴¹ “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

⁴⁴ “Then they also will answer Him,^[d] saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 

⁴⁵ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 

⁴⁶ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

彼の居住地

マタイの住居はカペルナウムにあった。そして、彼は、「徴税請負人」であった。当時、ゲネサレ湖の沿岸には非常に多くの人々が住んでおり、漁業が生計の源であり、またその湖面は海上交通で混雑していた。マタイが徴税請負人をしていたカペルナウムの税関はローマ帝国によって確立された。本来の徴税請負人たちはローマ人の金持ちたちであったが、彼らは居住民を配当人（portitors）と呼ばれる人々を代理人にして職務を代行させた。マタイはこのような人々に属する。

マタイの召し

福音の意味は、「良きおとずれ」、又は、「喜ばしい知らせ」である。それは一般的にこのメッセージそれ自体を示している。しかし、ここでは、このメッセージを含む記録についての書として用いられている。

新約聖書の著者の称号として用いられている「聖徒」という言葉は、ローマ・カトリックに由来するが、何の権威もない。

一般的には、マタイは最初彼の母語である、パレスティナの言語で書いたということが、かなり信じられている。その言語は純粋のへブル語ではなく、へブル語と、カルディア語と、シリア語との混成言語であり、普通、「Syro-Chaldaic」または、「Aramean」

と呼ばれるものである。私たちの救い主は、疑いなくこの言語を会話にお使いになっていた。そして、彼の弟子たちもまた、この言語を自然に使い、他の言語を用いて書くのに良い理由がなければならない場合を除いて、この言語を用いていたのである。

新約聖書で残存しているものはギリシャ語のものであることは、承認されている。

 

マタイ福音書

序章      メシアなるイエス（HBH）

マタイが特に強調する点は、イエスが旧約の預言者たちによってあらかじめ語られたメシアであるということである。マタイは繰り返し繰り返し旧約聖書から引用する。ユダヤ人読者を特に意識していたからであろう。この福音書は「天の御国」という言葉を非常に多く繰り返しているので、天国の福音とまで呼ばれている。全部とは言えないが、年代順よりもむしろ題目順に主な事件が集められている。イエスの説教、特に「山上の説教」「再臨と終末の教え」はすべて収録されている。

マタイ

この福音書に著者の名は出ていない。しかしパピアス（使徒ヨハネの弟子）に始まる初代教父の時代以来、使徒マタイの作と認められている。

マタイについてはほとんど何もわからない。彼はレビとも呼ばれた。十二使徒の名があげられている４つの記録は、どれも彼の名を記している。（マタイ10:3,マルコ3:18,ルカ6:15、使徒1:13）その他には彼がイエスの召命を受けた時の記事があるだけである。

マタイが自分について語っている唯一の言葉は、恥を意味する「取税人」という言葉であった。取税人はローマの税金徴収者であるが、多くは搾取を常習としていたので、一般の人々から軽蔑されていた。ルカの福音書には、マタイがイエスのために宴会を催し、イエスに従うために一切を捨てたとある。しかし、マタイはそれを自力でしたとは思っていない。彼は英雄に対する崇敬の念から我を忘れたのである。この我を忘れた謙遜さのゆえに、我々は彼を愛するのである。

また、このような人を「全世界で最も広く読まれた本」だというこの福音書の著者として選ばれた神の恵みに驚嘆する。

伝承ではマタイは幾年かをパレスティナで宣教し、その後諸外国を旅行した。彼はその福音書を最初はヘブル語で書き、幾年か後に、多分60年頃、さらに完全なギリシャ語の福音書として世に出したという。しかし本書を記した事の人類に与えた貢献はいかに大きかった事か。

マタイは取税人という職業で記録を取る事に慣れていたし、イエスの公生涯の間、個人的な接触があった。マタイがマルコの福音書から取材したという、広く行き渡った確証のない仮定は、明らかに馬鹿げた説である。マルコがイエスを知っていたかどうかは、確かではない。マタイはなぜ自分の目で見たり、自分の耳で聞いたりしたことを、目撃者でもない者の記録から取材しなければならないのか。

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 

¹⁹ Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 

²⁰ But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

 ²¹ And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His nameJesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

²² So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 

²³ “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

8.　そして、彼らをベスレヘムに送り出しながら、彼は言った、「行って、幼子のことを詳しく調べよ。そして、お前たちが彼を見つけたら余にそれを知らせよ。余もその人を拝みに行くから。」

9.　そこで、彼らは王の言う事を聞いて出て行った。すると、見よ、彼らが東方で見た星が彼らに先立って行き、その幼子のいる所にまで来ると、その上の方にとどまったのである。

10.　そして、彼らは星を見て、躍り上がるほどに喜んだ[2]。

11.　彼らが家に入ると、彼らは幼子が彼の母マリヤと共にいるのを見た。そして、跪いて彼を礼拝し、彼らの宝物入れを開け、それから金、乳香、没薬など、彼らのもろもろの贈り物を彼にささげた。

14.　そこで、彼は夜の内に幼子と彼の母とを連れて、エジプトに退いた。

20.　こう言った、「起きて、幼子と彼の母とを連れてイスラエルの地に入って行きなさい。幼子の命を狙っていた者たちは死にましたから。」

21.　そこで彼は起き上がり、幼子と彼の母とを連れてイスラエルの地に入った。

22.　しかし、アーケラオが父ヘロデに代わってユダヤを支配している事を聞いたので、彼はその地に行く事を恐れた。そして、夢の中で主のみ告げを受けたので、ガリラヤの地方に退いた。

23.　そして、彼はナザレと呼ばれる町に来てそこに住んだ。それは、預言者たちによって語られた、「ナザレの人、と彼は呼ばれる」という言葉が成就するためであった。

Wise Men from the East

2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

 ² saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

³ When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

 ⁴ And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

⁵ So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

⁶ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
Are not the least among the rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

⁷ Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. 

⁸ And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

⁹ When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. ¹⁰ When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 

¹¹ And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

¹² Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

The Flight into Egypt

¹³ Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”

¹⁴ When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 

¹⁵ and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Massacre of the Innocents

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 

¹⁷ Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

¹⁸ “A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted,
Because they are no more.”

¹⁹ Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

²⁰ saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child’s life are dead.”

 ²¹ Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

²² But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee.²³ And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

3.　それは、この人こそが預言者イザヤによって語られた人であったからである。こう仰せになっている、「荒野で声が叫んでいる。『主の道を整えよ。彼のもろもろの通り道を真っすぐにせよ』」と。

4.　 そして、ヨハネはラクダの毛皮を身にまとい、腰には皮の帯をしめていた。また、彼の食物はイナゴや野性の蜜であった。

‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.’”

⁴ Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

 ⁵ Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him 

⁶ and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

 ⁸ Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,

 ⁹ and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 

¹⁰ And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 

¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 

¹² His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

John Baptizes Jesus

¹³ Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 

¹⁴ And John tried toprevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”

¹⁵ But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

¹⁶ When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

¹⁷ And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
