マタイによる福音書第２章（欽定訳）

２章

1.　さて、王ヘロデの在位中にイエスがユダヤのベスレヘムで誕生されていたが、見よ、マジ[1]たちが東方からエルサレムに着いた。

2.　そして、こう言った、「ユダヤの王として誕生されたお方は、どこにおられますか？　私どもはその方の星を東（の地）で見ましたので、彼を礼拝しに来たのです。」

3.　しかし、ヘロデ王は聞いて困惑させられた。又、彼と共にいるすべてのエルサレム[の人々]もそうであった。

4.　そこで、祭司長たちと民の法学者たちが皆集められると、彼はその者たちに、キリストはどこに生まれる事になっているかと尋ねた。

5.　彼らは彼に言った、「ユダヤのベスレヘムです。預言者によってこのように書かれてありますから。

6.　『そして、ユダの地、汝ベスレヘムよ、おまえはユダの指導者たちの中で決して小さな者ではない。おまえの内から我が民イスラエルを牧する一人の指導者が現れるからだ。』」

7.　そこで、ヘロデは秘密のうちにマジたちを呼ぶと、その星の現れた時について彼らに詳しく尋ねた。

8.　そして、彼らをベスレヘムに送り出しながら、彼は言った、「行って、幼子のことを詳しく調べよ。そして、お前たちが彼を見つけたら余にそれを知らせよ。余もその人を拝みに行くから。」

9.　そこで、彼らは王の言う事を聞いて出て行った。すると、見よ、彼らが東方で見た星が彼らに先立って行き、その幼子のいる所にまで来ると、その上の方にとどまったのである。

10.　そして、彼らは星を見て、躍り上がるほどに喜んだ[2]。

11.　彼らが家に入ると、彼らは幼子が彼の母マリヤと共にいるのを見た。そして、跪いて彼を礼拝し、彼らの宝物入れを開け、それから金、乳香、没薬など、彼らのもろもろの贈り物を彼にささげた。

12.　それから、夢の中でヘロデの所には戻らないようにと御告げを受けたので、他の道を通って彼らの国に帰って行った。

13.　さて、彼らが引き上げると、見よ、主の使いが夢の中でヨセフに現れてこう言った、「起きて幼子と彼の母とを連れてエジプトに逃げなさい。そして、私があなたに告げるまではそこにいなさい。今まさに、ヘロデが彼を捜し出して殺そうとしているからです。」

14.　そこで、彼は夜の内に幼子と彼の母とを連れて、エジプトに退いた。

15.　そして、そこにヘロデが死ぬまでいたが、それは主が預言者によってお語りになった事が成就するためであった。それには、こう仰せになっている、「エジプトから、私はわが子を呼び出した。」

16.　さて、ヘロデはマジたちに騙された事がわかったので激怒した。そして、[手下を］送って、マジたちから確かに聞いておいた時に基づき、その時の、二才とそれ以下のベスレヘムと近郊のすべての地域の男の子を皆殺した。

17.　その時、預言者エレミヤによって語られた言葉が成就された。そこではこう仰せになっている。

18.　「ラマで声が聞かれた、悲嘆と、嘆きと、大いなる悲しみの。ラケルが彼女の子供たちのために泣いている。そして、慰められる事さえ願わない。彼らがもういないからだ。」

19.　さて、ヘロデが死んだ後、見よ、一人の主の使いが、エジプトにいるヨセフに夢の中で現れて

20.　こう言った、「起きて、幼子と彼の母とを連れてイスラエルの地に入って行きなさい。幼子の命を狙っていた者たちは死にましたから。」

21.　そこで彼は起き上がり、幼子と彼の母とを連れてイスラエルの地に入った。

22.　しかし、アーケラオが父ヘロデに代わってユダヤを支配している事を聞いたので、彼はその地に行く事を恐れた。そして、夢の中で主のみ告げを受けたので、ガリラヤの地方に退いた。

23.　そして、彼はナザレと呼ばれる町に来てそこに住んだ。それは、預言者たちによって語られた、「ナザレの人、と彼は呼ばれる」という言葉が成就するためであった。

Wise Men from the East

2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

 ² saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

³ When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

 ⁴ And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

⁵ So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

⁶ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
Are not the least among the rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

⁷ Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. 

⁸ And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

⁹ When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. ¹⁰ When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 

¹¹ And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

¹² Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

The Flight into Egypt

¹³ Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”

¹⁴ When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 

¹⁵ and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Massacre of the Innocents

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 

¹⁷ Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

¹⁸ “A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted,
Because they are no more.”

The Home in Nazareth

¹⁹ Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

²⁰ saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child’s life are dead.”

 ²¹ Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

²² But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee.²³ And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

１章

1.　ダビデの子、アブラハムの子である、イエス・キリストの系図の書。

2.　 アブラハムは、イサクを生み、イサクはヤコブを生み、ヤコブはユダと、彼の兄弟たちとを生んだ。

3.　そして、ユダはサマルによって、ファレスとザラとを生み、ファレスはエスロムを生み、エスロムはアラムを生んだ。

4.　そして、アラムはアミナダブを生み、アミナダブはナアソンを生み、ナアソンはサルモーンを生んだ。

5.　そして、サルモーンはラカブによって、ボアズを生み、ボアズは、ルスによってオベドを生み、オベドはエッサイを生んだ。

6.　そして、エッサイは国王ダビデを生み、ダビデ王は、ウリヤの妻によってソロモーンを生んだ。

18.　さて、イエス・キリストの誕生は、次のようであった。彼の母、マリヤは、ヨセフと婚約していたが、彼らがまだ一緒にならない前に、彼女は聖霊によって子を宿したことがわかった。

19.　しかし、彼女の夫ヨセフは正しい人であって、彼女をさらし者にしたくはなかったので、人に知られないうちに彼女を離縁しようとした。

20.　そして、彼がこれらの事について深く考えこんでいると、見よ、主の使いが夢の中で彼に現れて、こう言った。

　「ヨセフよ、ダビデの息子よ、あなたは、マリヤを妻に迎える事を恐れてはいけない。彼女の胎にお宿りになっている方は聖霊によるものだからです。

21.　彼女は男の子を産みます。そして、あなたは彼の名をイエスと呼びなさい。彼はご自分の（彼の）民を彼らの罪からお救いになるからです。」

22.　これらのすべての事が起こったのは、主が、預言者たちを通して語られた、その事が成就されるためであった。それには、こう仰せになっている。

23.　「見よ、おとめが身ごもって、息子を産む。そして、彼らは、彼の名をエンマヌーエルと呼ぶ。」それは、「天の神が、我らと共におられる」と訳される。

24.　ヨセフは、その眠りからさめると、主の使いが彼に命じた通りにし、彼の妻を迎えた。

25.　そして、彼女が初子の息子[2]を出産するまでは、彼女を知る事がなかった。そして、彼は、彼の名をイエスと呼んだ。

² Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.

 ³ Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.

 ⁴ Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 

⁵ Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 

⁶ and Jesse begot David the king.

David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. 

⁷ Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa.

 ⁸ Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.

¹³ Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 

¹⁴ Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud.

 ¹⁵ Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 

¹⁶ And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

¹⁷ So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ arefourteen generations.

Christ Born of Mary

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 

¹⁹ Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 

²⁰ But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

 ²¹ And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His nameJesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

²² So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 

²³ “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

²⁴ Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 

²⁵ and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
