マタイによる福音書第６章（欽定訳）

６章

1.　人々の前で汝の施しをしないように注意せよ。彼らに見られないようにするためである。そうでないと、もろもろの天におられるあなたがたの父からは、報酬を受け取れない。
2.　[i]汝らが施しをする時は、偽善者たちがスナゴーグや通りで人々から栄誉を受けるためにするように、汝の前でラッパを鳴らさないようにしてはならない。アーメン。私は[ii]汝らに言う。彼らはその報酬を受けてしまっている。
3.　汝が善の施しをする時には、右手がしている事を左手には知られないようにせよ。
4.　そうすれば[iii]汝施しが秘密のものとなり、秘密の（所で）見ておられる汝父ご自身が、[1]はっきりとした形にして[2]汝に報いて下さるであろう。
5.　又、[3]汝が祈る時、偽善者たちのようであってはいけない。なぜなら、彼らは人々に見られるために、これらのスナゴーグや通りの角に立って祈る事を愛している。アーメン。私は言う。彼らはその報酬を[4]受けてしまっている。
6.　しかし、[iv]あなたが祈る時は、汝の秘密の部屋の中に入ってその戸を閉め、密かな所におられる汝の父に祈りなさい。そうすれば、密かな所で見ておられる汝の父は、[5]明らかな形でなに報いて下さであろう。
7.　また、[6]あなたがたが祈る時には、諸国民たちのように空しい繰り返しを用いてはいけない。彼らは自分たちの口数の多さによって彼らの祈りが聞かれると考えている。
8.　しかし、彼らのようであってはいけない。汝らの父は、汝らが彼に求める前に汝の必要とする事共を知っておられるからである。
9.　 そこで、あなたがたはこのように祈れ。『天におられます私たちのおとうさま、御名があがめられますように。
10.　あなたの王国を来たらせて下さい。あなたのみこころが天で行われているように、地上でも行わせて下さい。
11.　私たちに、今日必要な食物をお与え下さい。
12.　私たちが私たちの負債者を赦しておりますように、私たちの負債をお赦し下さい。
13.　又、私たちを試みの中に入れず、悪から開放して下さい。あなたの王国と、力と、栄光とは永遠に至るからです。アーメン。』
14.　もし、汝らがもろもろの過失から赦しているならば、もろもろの天におられる汝らも、父も汝をお赦しになる。
15.　しかし、もし、彼らをもろもろの過失から赦してあげていないなら、汝らの父も同様に、汝のもろもろの過失をお赦しにならない。
16.　[7]また、汝らが断食をするときは、偽善者たちのようであってはいけない。彼らは自分が断食をしているのを人々に表すために、彼らの顔を暗く装っている。アーメン。私は汝らに言う。彼らはその報酬を受けてしまっている。
17.　だかをする時にはあなた汝ならの頭に油を塗り、あなたの顔を洗いなさい。
18.　そうすれば人間にではなく、密かな所にいる[vi]汝らの父に汝の断食が明らかになり、密かな所で見ている汝の父が、明らかな形にしてあなたに汝に報いて下さるであろう。
19.　[vii]汝らの宝をこの地上に蓄えていないようにせよ。そこでは虫と錆とが台無しにし、盗人が掘り出して盗み出すのである。
20.　そこで、汝らの宝を天に蓄えよ。そこでは虫も錆も台無しにすることがなく、又、盗人が掘り出す事も盗む事もない。
21.　[viii]汝ら゙の宝のある所には、汝らの心もまたあるからである。
22.　体の光は目である。だから、[ix]汝の目が健全[8]であれば、全身も光で満たされる。
23.　しかし、もし、汝の目が悪ければ汝の体全部が暗くなる。もし、汝内にあるその明かりが暗ければ、それはどんなにひどい暗闇であることか！
24.　だれも二人の主に仕えることはできない。なぜなら一方を憎み、そして、他方を愛する。又、一方を支持するが他方を軽蔑してしまう。[9]汝は天の神にも仕え、マンモン（富と強欲の神）にも仕えることはできない。
25.　それ故、私は汝らに言う。何を汝は食べ、何を飲むのかと、汝の魂のために心配し、また、何を着ようかと、汝の体のために心配するな。食べ物に勝り、又、体は着物に勝っていないか？
26.　空の鳥たちを見よ。彼らは蒔かず、刈り取らず、集めて倉に入れる事もしていない。しかし、天にいます汝らの父は彼らを養っておられる。汝ら彼らよりはるかに価値があるのではないか？
27.　汝の内のだれが心配する事によって、彼の身長を一キュービット加える事ができるのか？
28.　また、何故着るものについて心配しているのか？野のユリたちがどのようにして育つのかをよく考えよ。彼らは働かず、紡いでもいない。
29.　しかし、[x]汝に言う。ソロモーンも、彼の栄耀栄華の中でさえもこれらの中の一つほどにも装ってはいなかった。
30.　今日は野にあるが、明日には炉に投げ入れられる野の草でさえも天の神はこのように装って下さるのなら、尚更のこと汝らににして下さらない事があるだろうか？ああ、信仰の小さな者たちよ。
31.　だから心配して、『何をわたしたちは食べるのか、何をわたしたちは飲むのか、又、何を着るのか』と言うな。
32.　これらの物は、すべて諸国民たちが慕い求めているものではないか。天におられる汝らの父は、汝らがこれらの物すべてが必要である事を知っておられるのだ。
33.　だから、まず天の神の王国と彼の義とを求めよ。そうすれば、これらの物は与えられる。
34.　だから、明日について心配するな。これらの事は明日自身が心配する。その日のやっかい事[10]は、それだけで十分である。

Matthew 6

Do Good to Please God
6 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 
2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 
4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
The Model Prayer
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Fasting to Be Seen Only by God
16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 
18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Lay Up Treasures in Heaven
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The Lamp of the Body
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.
23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
You Cannot Serve God and Riches
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 
27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 
29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 
30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

５章

1.　さて、群衆を見て彼は山に上って座られると、彼の弟子たちが彼のもとに来た。
2.　そこで、彼は口を開いて彼らに教えてこう仰せになった、
3.　「霊[1]の貧しい人々は幸いである。もろもろの天の王国は彼らのものである。
4.　 悲しんでいる人々は幸いである。彼らは慰められるからである。
5.　 柔和な人々は幸いである。彼らは地を受け継ぐであろう。
6.　 義に飢え乾いている人々は幸いである。彼らは満ち足りるであろう。
7.　 あわれみ深い人々は幸いである。彼らは憐れみを受けるであろう。
8.　 心[2]が清い人々は。彼らは天の神を見るであろう。
9.　 平和を造りだす人々は幸いである。彼らは天の神の息子たちと呼ばれるであろう。
10.　義のために迫害された人々は幸いである。もろもろの天の王国は彼らのものである。
11.　彼らが私のためにあなたがたを非難し、迫害し、もろもろの悪口をあなたがたに言い、嘘をつく時には幸いである。
12.　喜べ。躍り上がって喜べ[3]。もろもろの天の王国では、汝の報いは大きい。彼らは汝らの前に預言者たちを同じように迫害したのだ。
13.　汝らは地の塩である。しかし、もし塩が塩気がなくなったら、何によって味付けられるのか？もはや何の力もなく、投げ捨てられて人々に踏みにじられのである。
14.　汝らはこの世界の光である。山の上にある都市は、隠れる事ができない。
15.　また、人々は灯を点灯したら、量り升の下に置かないで明かり台の上に置く。するとそれは家の中にいるすべての人々のために輝いている。
16.　そのようにして汝の光を人々の前で輝かせ、彼らが汝らの良い行いを見る事によって、もろもろの天にいます、汝らの父を崇めるようにせ
17.　私が来たのが、法やもろもろの預言を廃止するためであると考えなえてはならない。私が来たのは廃止するためではなく、それを実現するためなのである。
18.　アーメン。天と地とが過ぎ去るまでは、すべてが成るまで、法から一つのイオタ、一つのケライアでも決して廃れることはない。
19.　それで、これらの法の最も小さな一つでも破る者やそのように人々に教えるすべての人は、もろもろの天の王国では最も小さな者と呼ばれる。しかし、だれでもそれを実行し、そして、それを教えるならば、彼はもろもろの天の王国で偉大な人と呼ばれるのである。

21.　汝らは、『人を殺すな。人を殺す者はだれでも裁判に処せられなければならない』。と、昔の人々が言われていた事を聞いている。
22.　しかし、私は汝らに言う。理由もないのに彼の兄弟に対して怒る者は、皆、裁判に処せられる。又、彼の兄弟に対してラカ[4]と言う者は、皆サンヘドリン[5]に向かわなければならない。更にモーレ[6]と言う者は、皆火炎のゲヘナに処せられる。
23.　だから、もし、汝が祭壇で汝のささげ物をしようとしている時に、汝の兄弟が汝に対して何かの事で敵意を持っているのを思い出すならば、
24.　祭壇の前にあなたのささげ物を置きなさい。そして、行ってまずのその兄弟と和解し、それから来て汝のささげ物をしなさい。
25.　汝と敵対する者とは、共に道を行く間に速やかに彼と和解しなさい。そうでなければ敵は汝を裁判所に渡し、裁判官は汝を下役に渡し、そして、汝は獄に投げ込まれる。
26.　アーメン。私は汝に言う。最後のコドラント[7]を払うまで、決してそこから出られない。
27.　汝らは、昔の人々に対して『姦淫を犯すな』と言われているのを聞いている。
28.　しかし、私は汝らに言う。女性を欲望をもって見ている者は皆、既に彼の心の中で彼女と姦淫を犯してしまったのだ。
29.　だから、もし、汝の右の目があなたのつまずきの原因となるならば、それを汝から抜き出して捨てよ。汝の体の一つが滅びて体全部がゲヘナに投げ入れらない方が、より有益なのだから。

31.　だれでも妻と離縁するなら『彼に、妻に対する離婚状を渡させよ』、と言われている。
32.　しかし、私は汝に言う。不貞以外の理由で彼女を離縁している人は彼女に姦淫を犯させ、別れた女性を娶っている人は皆、姦淫を犯しているのである。
33.　又、昔の人々に対して『いつわりり誓うな。主に対して汝の誓いを果たせ。』と言われているのを汝らは聞いている。
34．しかし、私は汝らに言う。一切誓ってはならない。天によっても。それは天の神の玉座ある。
35.　地によっても。それは彼の御足の足台である。また、エルサレムによっても。それは最も大いなる王の都である。
36.　又自分の頭によっても。汝は髪の毛の一本も白くも黒くもする事ができない。
37.　しかし、汝の言葉は[ナイ』『ウー[9]、ウー』であらせなさい。それ以上の言葉は悪しき者から出ている。
38.　汝らはこう言われているのを聞いている。『目に対しては目を。歯に対しては歯を』。
39.　しかし、私は汝らに言う悪人に対して抵抗してはならない。だれでも汝の頬を打つならば反対側の頬も彼に向けよ。
40.　また、だれかが汝を[10]告訴して汝のチューュニックを取ろうとするならば、汝外套をも与えよ。

42.　[i]汝に求めている者には与えよ。又、あなたから借りようとする者からは取り返そうとしないようにするな。

The Beatitudes
5 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
    For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
    For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
    For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
    For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
    For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
    For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Believers Are Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Christ Fulfills the Law
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Murder Begins in the Heart
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 
22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 
25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.
Adultery in the Heart
27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 
28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Marriage Is Sacred and Binding
31 “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’
32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality[e] causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
Jesus Forbids Oaths
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 
36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
Go the Second Mile
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 
39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 
40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 
41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 
42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
Love Your Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 
45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 
47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

４章

1.　それから、イエスは聖霊[1]によって、[2]ディアボロスから試みられる為に、荒野へと導き入れられた。

2.　そして、四十日の昼夜を断食した後、彼は飢えられた。

3.　すると、彼の所に試みる者がやって来て，言った。「もし、あなたが天の神の息子であるならば、これらの石がパンになるように言いなさい。」

4.　しかし、彼は答えて仰せになった。「『人はただパンだけで生きるのではなく、神の口から出ている、すべての言葉による。』と書いてある。」

5.　すると、ディアボロスは彼を聖都へと携えて行き、彼を神殿の翼（そで）に置いて、

6.　彼に言った、「あなたが天の神の息子であるなら、あなた自身を下に投げなさい。『あなたについて、彼は彼の使いたちに[3]指図される。』すると、『彼らはその両手をもってあなたを支え、あなたの足が石に激しくあたる事のないようにする。』と書いてありますから。」

7.　イエスは彼に仰せになった、「『主なる、あなたの天の神を試みてはならない。』とも書いてある。」

8.　ディアボロスは再び彼を非常に高い山に連れて行き、彼に、世界のすべての王国と栄耀栄華とを見せた。

9.　そして彼に言った、「もし、あなたが跪いて私を拝むなら、これらのものを全部あなたにさしあげましょう。」。

10.　その時、イエスは彼に仰せになった。「我が後ろに引き下がれ[4]、サタン！こう書いてある。『汝は、主である、天の神を礼拝し、そして、彼にのみ仕えよ』と。」

11.　すると、ディアボロスは彼から離れて行った。そして見よ、使いたちがそば近くに来て、彼に仕えた。

12.　さて、イエスは、ヨハネが捕らえられたと聞いて、彼はガリラヤへと発たれた。

13.　そして、ナザレを離れ、ザブローンとナフサリの境にある、海沿いのカペナウムに来て彼は住まわれた。

14.　それは、預言者イザヤによって語られた事が成就するためであった。こう仰せになっている、

15.　「ザブローンの地、ナフサリの地、ヨルダンの向こうの、海沿いの道にある異教徒のガリラヤ、

16.　暗黒の中に座している人々は、偉大な光を見た。又、死の地方と死の影の中に居る者たちに、光が昇った。」[5]

17.　その時からイエスは宣教を開始して仰せになった、「悔い改めなさい、もろもろの天の王国が間近になったからだ。」

18.　また、イエスが、ガリラヤ湖岸を歩いていると、彼は二人の兄弟たち、ペテロと呼ばれるシモーンと、彼の兄弟アンドレが、大きな網を海に投げているのをご覧になった。彼らは漁師だったからである。

19.　そして、彼らに仰せになった、「私について来なさい。そうすれば、私は汝らを人間の漁師にしてあげよう。」

20.　すると、彼らは、直ちにそれらの網を残して彼についていった。

21.　又、少し行くと、彼は他に二人の兄弟たち、ゼベダイの息子ヤコブと、彼の兄弟のヨハネとが舟の中で、彼らの父ゼベダイと共に、彼らの網共を直しているのをごらんになった。彼は、[6]彼らをお呼びになった。

22.　すると、彼らは直ちに舟と彼らの父とを置いて、彼についていった。

23.　さて、イエスはガリラヤ中を行き巡り、彼らのスナゴーグで教え、王国の福音を布告された。そして、彼らの中のすべての病人とすべての体の弱っている者をお癒しになった。

24.　そこで彼の名声はスリア全土に広がった。そして彼らは、病気の人々、様々な病気や苦痛で悩んでいる人々、悪霊共に取りつかれている人々、[7]精神障害を負っている人々、身体不随の人々を皆連れて来たが、彼は、彼らをお癒しになった。

25.　そして、ガリラヤ、デカポリス、また、エルサレム、ユダヤと、ヨルダンの向こうから、非常に多くの群衆が彼の後を追った。

Satan Tempts Jesus
4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 
2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 
6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles:
16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned.”[f]
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Four Fishermen Called as Disciples
18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them,
 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Jesus Heals a Great Multitude
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.
 24 Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. 
25 Great multitudes followed Him—from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
